Who We Are We are a community garden located in MLK, Jr. Park off of Hillsborough Road in Carrboro, NC. The goal of the Carrboro Family Garden is to educate and assist families with young children to grow their own vegetables and, in the process, for children to learn where food comes from and for families to have greater access to fresh food. Each family tends their own ten foot by ten foot garden parcel. All supplies and materials, tools. seeds, and fertilizer are provided to families, as well as advice on gardening basics.
Our Garden Practices We garden organically. Our compost is donated from CompostNow. We receive leaves for our garden beds from the town of Carrboro and wood chips for our garden paths from a local arborist. Our water for irrigating crops comes from cisterns that harvest rainwater from the roofs of buildings within MLK, Jr. Park and from OWASA.
Garden with Us We start breaking out the shovels in mid-March with once-a-month communal workdays to weed paths, tidy the shed, share transplants, and so on. We take a break from group workdays in the winter months. Gardeners tend their personal plots whenever they wish throughout the year. In order to receive a plot in the garden, you must live in Carrboro or Chapel Hill and have a child under the age of 18.
Funding The garden is self-funded by members at $20, $40, and $60 levels, though no one is turned away due to an inability to pay. We also partner with the Cardinal Track Club - by staffing three Cardinal Track Club races per year with five individuals, we receive funding to cover our garden manager. The manager plans workdays, purchases supplies, manages our finances, and provides expertise to our gardeners.
